We love a great pizza, especially when it comes from one of our favorite local eateries, Pi-Squared. This restaurant serves up their traditional Detroit-style pizzas, plus a number of other delicious menu items you won’t want to miss. Here’s what you need to know about this locally-famous pizzeria.
What is Detroit-style pizza?
Detroit-style pizza was actually begun by American troops returning from Europe following WWII. They’d fallen in love with the pizza they’d eaten overseas and attempted to recreate it in the U.S. A Detroit speakeasy owner lent them his Sicilian wife’s family dough recipe. They layered on pepperoni, cheese, and seasoned tomato sauce. Then they baked their creation in square steel pans like the ones used as parts trays in Detroit’s booming automotive industry. The result was a thick, chewy crust that was crispy on the outside due to the caramelized cheese. Their pie was a hit, and the rest is history.
What’s on the menu?
In addition to their signature square pizza, Pi-Squared also offers traditional round crust and thin cracker crust versions of each specialty pizza. Our favorites include the Detroiter (the original with spicy pepperoni and Italian seasonings), Meat Pi (the original plus ham, sausage, beef, and bacon), the Fig-et About It (mission figs, gorgonzola, red pepper seeds, and a drizzle of honey), and the new Chicken Pesto (grilled chicken, mushrooms, roasted red pepper, pesto, and cheese). If you’re not in the mood for pizza, try their wings (The Flappers), a calzone (The Fold), a sub sandwich, or one of their delicious salads.
Why Pi-Squared?
Pi-Squared makes smart choices in every step of their process. When a lot of competitors started to cut corners in order to cut costs, Pi-Squared saw the need to create the Detroit-style pizza everyone had come to love, with higher-quality flavor-rich ingredients. Their name gives a nod to that nerdy number (3.14, which is also Einstein’s birthday), as well as to the fact that their pizzas are a work of genius. They’re also square, so…there you have it.
